Southeast Asia Container Transport Industry
Southeast Asia is geographically very important, it is located between the Pacific Ocean and the Indian Ocean, but also in the Asian continent and the Pacific state connection belt, is the communication between Asia, Africa, Europe, Oceania navigation must pass, but also the exchange of materials between North and South America and Asia, suitable for the development of transport industry. With the rapid economic development of Southeast Asia, gradually become an integral part of the global industrial chain, the booming economy further promotes the development of its container transport industry.
There are certain gaps in the development of container transport industry in Southeast Asian countries. Singapore container transport industry is well developed, the port of Singapore is the international container transit center, but also the world’s largest and one of the busiest container ports, bearing about one-fifth of the global freight trade. In 2021, the port of Singapore hit a record-breaking 37,468,000 TEU throughput.
Southeast Asia in this report includes 10 countries: Singapore, Thailand, Philippines, Malaysia, Indonesia, Vietnam, Myanmar, Brunei, Laos and Cambodia. With a total population of over 600 million by the end of 2021, Southeast Asia has an overall economic growth rate higher than the global average and is one of the key drivers of future global economic growth.
According to CRI’s analysis, the economic levels of the 10 Southeast Asian countries vary greatly, with Singapore being the only developed country with a per capita GDP of about US$73,000 in 2021. While Myanmar and Cambodia will have a GDP per capita of less than US$2,000 in 2021. The population and minimum wage levels of each country also vary greatly. Brunei, which has the smallest population, will have a total population of less than 500,000 people in 2021, while Indonesia, which has the largest population, will have a population of about 275 million people in 2021.
CRI expects that Southeast Asia container transport industry will continue to grow from 2023-2032. On the one hand, Southeast Asia’s economic development, infrastructure gradually improved, domestic consumer demand will promote the development of its container transport industry. On the other hand, as Southeast Asia further participate in economic globalization, the demand for foreign trade will also promote the expansion of the container transportation industry scale.
