Malaysia is the second largest palm oil producer in the world. As per estimates, palm oil heavily dominates sales in the country. Owing to government subsidies, local manufacturers can produce palm oil at a low cost, making it the cheapest option within the edible oil category. In 2021, the retail price of palm oil increased due to the production cost of crude oil and labor shortages. As a result, palm oil consumption slowed in 2021, with consumers opting for subsidized standard palm oil.
Nevertheless, despite the increase in its average price, consumers are expected to continue purchasing palm oil over the forecast period. This is because it is the cheapest option among edible oils. Besides, the government’s aim to allocate more funds to subsidize palm oil and ensure adequate yearly supply will drive its demand across the nation over the forecast period.
