Status Quo of China’s Sewage Treatment Industry
With the progress of industrialization and urbanization and with the rapid development of social economy in recent years, the problem of pollution has become necessary to be solved. Sewage treatment has become an essential part of economic development and water resources protection.
- River Pollution
According to Bulletin of Environmental Status of China for the Year of 2015 issued by Ministry of Environmental Protection of PRC, the proportion of water quality sections of typeⅠ~Ⅲ, Ⅳ~Ⅴ and inferiorⅤis respectively 72.1%, 19.0% and 8.9% in state-controlled sections of seven major basins, (which are Yangtze River, Yellow River, the Pearl River, the Songhua River, Huai River, the Haihe River and Liao River,) Fujian River, and rivers in Northwest and Southwest China.
- Severe Underground Water Pollution
The total number of monitoring sites for the environment and quality of underground water was 5,118, among which 1,000 were national grade. The proportion of monitoring sites for good-quality underground water was 9.1%; the proportion of that for fine water quality was 4.6%; poor quality water reached 42.5%, and the proportion of that for worse water quality reached 18.8%.
- Increasing Water Consumption and Discharge Volume of Wastewater
According to the data from National Bureau of Statistics, water consumption in China increased from 554.780 billion tons to 609.486 billion tons from 2004 to 2014, with an increase of 9.86%. Meanwhile, total discharge volume of wastewater increased from 48.240 billion tons to 71.618 billion tons, with an increase of 48.46%.
- Composite Pollution
In recent years, as the discharge volume of domestic sewage has increased rapidly due to the expansion of the urban population, and the organic content of sewage has increased significantly due to the universal use of agricultural fertilizer, COD (mainly caused by organics) increased from 13.67 million tons in 2002 to 22.9460 million tons in 2014 (Source: National Bureau of Statistics). Meanwhile, the content of pollutant including POPs (Persistent Organic Pollutants), TN (Total Nitrogen), TP (Total Phosphorus), etc. also increased, which caused that the water pollution were more complex.
